CAMPBELL, Alex - Scotland\ singer with gtr\ 1969 - (1924-1987 died in Denmark 3/1/87) was a leading figure in the Folk Revival, in Britain, and on the continent, busking and performing at Festivals. In the 50's, he worked with Derroll Adams in Paris, and by the 70's, he was a main attraction at the annual Cambridge Folk Festival, getting a new generation of young enthusiasts singing their heads off, and creased up with laughter. At the same time, he always managed to educate them on the background to the music, without their being aware of it. Ian Campbell, writing about Alex in FOLK ROOTS, remarked on the number of imitators Alex had, and yet how very few of them had that special charisma that enabled him to capture such an empathy with his audience: "and the wealth of experience that gave him such control over the mood and pace of a performance". Alex was the perfect antidote to the seriousness of the majority of today's Folk Clubbers. Like Margaret Barry in Ireland ( 070), within a few seconds, he had the most difficult of audiences hanging on his every word, and every folk club leader knew that a visit from Alex would breathe new life into his local club -- Concert with French students at Dartington College of Arts, rec by PK, Dartington Ciderhouse, Totnes, Devon 1974; FTX-364 - TRANSATLANTIC SAM-6 1969 - "San Francisco Blues" Radio 2; 8/11/87: CASS-90-0550 - Wally Whyton talks about him & songs "I'm a Rover" & "Nya Song" (with audience): Radio 2 Xmas prog 30/12/88 CASS-0423-4 - "Coal-owner & Pitman's Wife" (live) Radio 2: 1/4/87: CASS 90-0567 - Radio 2: 26/9/91 CASS-90- 0990 - "Dark as a Dungeon" & "Don't think twice" Radio 2: 28/2/90 CASS-30-1039 - KAZ RECORDS TBX MC 513 1995/ cass 1383 "I'm a rover"

CURTIS, Andrew - Dorset\ unacc singer (age 81)\ 1954 - aged 81 when recorded at his house in Townsend Road, Corfe, was born at Puddle Mill, Isle of Purbeck. His father from Swanage was a carter and Andrew started doing delivery work for the Post Office at the age of 8. After that he did "every job on a farm", and then ran his own threshing tackle, taking it round the farms. When he retired he made toys in his tool shed. Like many others Peter encountered in both Dorset and Wiltshire, Andrew had his own Riddle Drum, a calfskin over a large farm sieve, which was used to accompany local melodeon players. It was beaten with a double ended stick, then it was vibrated by wetting the thumb and running it across the head of the drum. (15 years later the same type of drum started to be used by Irish players, and now, as "the Bodhran" it is regarded as a uniquely Irish folk instrument !) -- rec by PK, Corfe 10/10/54: RTR-0176/ RPL 21476-7 (4 songs) & Talk about singing & tune for 4-hand Reel "Sally's gone to Dorchester" - FTX-408 - FTX-514 "The Sailor & the Shepherdess"

CUTTY, Gordon - Durham\ Engl conc\ 1954 - aged 54 when recorded at Kelloe, a miner still working as a surface labourer at East Hetton Colliery. He learned the concertina from his father, Edward Cutty, also a miner, who used to play for his own amusement, for occasional dances as well as for step-dancing by local miners. All the family were musical and some members had emigrated to America and played there in concertina bands. Gordon was still playing locally in a band for old-fashioned dances when PK went to Durham in 1947.. They had started with just a fiddle, but had recently added piano, drums and trumpet. With the exception of the Bb hornpipes composed by the celebrated Newcastle fiddler, James Hill, Gordon played local hornpipes composed by William Graham of South Hetton, a friend of his father and a well-known local violinist and composer. photo by: 0226 -- rec by PK, Kelloe 24/6/54 (12 tunes) RPL 20602-3/ RTR- 0056/ FTX-118 - FREE REED FRR-006 1976 "Grand Old- fashioned Dance"
