FTX 435 - SLIEVE
GALLON BRAE - VOICES RAISED IN ULSTER
A patchwork of rebel-rousing and more compassionate love song from the North
of Ireland - from Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone
reecorded 1952-4. The lampoon on the exploits of Lord Leitrim, recorded by Peter
Kennedy and Sean O Boyle, from Miles Duggan at Belleek was considered unsuitable
for radio broadcasting in the 1950s, though Frank Card's "Ribbonman's Wife"
and "Moira ni Kelly", learned from his grandmother, Mary Waits of
Dungannon Co Tyrone, managed to get through the net. The oldest with the most
prized ballads was Pat Kelly, 78, recorded in Newry, reared at Mullaghbawn in
South Armagh, the youngest 12 year-old Joe Moran with his outstanding version
of "Willie Lennox drowning in the Lake of Coolfinn"
