FTX 435 - SLIEVE
GALLON BRAE - VOICES RAISED IN ULSTER
A patchwork of rebel-rousing and the more compassionate love songs from
the North of Ireland - from Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh
and Co Tyrone recorded 1952-4. The lampoon on the feudal exploits of "Lord
Leitrim", recorded by Peter Kennedy and Sean O Boyle, from Miles Duggan
at Belleek was considered unsuitable for radio broadcasting in the 1950s, though
Frank Card's "Ribbonman's Wife" and "Moira ni Kelly", learned
from his grandmother, Mary Waits of Dungannon Co Tyrone, managed to get through
the radio net. The oldest informant with the most prized ballads was Pat Kelly,
78, recorded in Newry, reared at Mullaghbawn in South Armagh, and the youngest
informant was 12 year-old Joe Moran with his outstanding version of "Willie
Lennox drowning in the Lake of Coolfinn"
