KENNEDY, David - (1825-1887) - "The Scottish Singer" - born in the city of Perth, Scotland 15th April 1825 and died at Stratford, Ontario, Canada 5th October 1887. Brought up among the families of hand-loom weavers, his father and uncle were both precenters in the two Scottish Presbyterian kirks, the North and the South, in Perth. The elder "Singing Kennedys" organised glee clubs and gave concerts in Perth and neighbourhood and young David took part in all the activities, in particular becoming an admirer of the famous Scots singer, John Templeton, whom later in life he visited in London.
In 1848, while working as a journeyman painter, he got a position as a precenter in Edinburgh and moved there from Perth. When marriage was contemplated, he got work in London, one of his jobs involving painting a ceiling in Buckingham Palace where he met Prince Albert. On returning to Perth he married Helen Henderson but unfortunately Helen died after only 5 years of married life leaving him three bairns, two sons, David and James, and daughter, Helen. It was then he that he felt called to become a professional singer. Two years later he married Elizabeth Fraser. Although he still had his business in Perth, he was attending concerts in Edinburgh and having singing and elocution lessons. (The latter from the father of the inventor of the telephone). For singing he studied with an Englishman, Edmund Edmunds who had been trained in the Italian school.
In 1857 determined to earn his fortune as a public singer he succeeded, after intensive auditions, in getting the precentorship of Nicholson Street United Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh at £40 a year. He gave up his business in Perth and threw himself into teaching and giving occasional concerts and eventually was appointed leader of the Edinburgh Tonic Sol-fa Society. Gaining access to the Advocates Library he started researching Scottish songs. Many book-songs were tried out in public but eventually laid aside and replaced by the traditional. He examined Herd, R.A.Smith, Thomson and Johnson's Museum and compared them with versions in Whitelaw and Chambers "Scottish Songs Prior to Burns", eventually becoming a personal friend of Robert Chambers.
In 1859, the year of the Burns Centenary he was engaged to perform at St George's Hall Liverpool and from then on became the most sought after singer for Jan 25th Burns nights all over the World.

All three died in a fire in the opera house in Nice - Autumn 1881 he made his second visit to Canada and USA with 5 children: Robert and John and three daughters, Helen , Marjory and Maggie, reaching as far North-West as Winnipeg, but became ill towards the end of the Canadian tour he became ill and was unable to sing in the Town Hall at Stratford Ontario died of Canadian cholera - Here are some of the songs (other than by Rabbie Burns) in his repertoire: Alister McAlister/ An thou wert my ain thing/ The Auld man's mare's deid/ The Bailiff's Daughter of Islington/ Bessy Bell & Mary Gray/ The Bonny Hoose o' Airlie/ The Brisk Young Lad/ Burns and Highland Mary/ Ca the Ewes to the Knowes/ Come under my plaidie/ The De'il's awa wi' the Exciseman/ The Dowie Dens o Yarrow/ Earlistoun (Child Ballad)/ The Flowers of the Forest/ Get up and bar the door-o (he wrote an extra verse - see p64)/ Golden Vanitie (Douglas K sang this)/ Hame cam oor gudeman at een (Cuckold Song/Child Ballad)/ Helen of Kirkconnel/ Holland, Green Holland/ Jenny come down to Jock/ Jenny dang the weaver (he wrote an extra 2vs - see p65)/ John Grumlie/ The Jolly Beggar/ The Laird o' Cockpen/ The Land o' the Leal/ Lizzie Lindsay/ My wife has ta'en the gee/ The Rinawa' bride/ Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch /Saw ye my father?/ Tak' your auld cloak aboot ye/ Tibby, fowler of the glen/ Wae's me for Prince Charlie (words & orig intro)/ Waly Waly/ The Weary pund o' tow/ The Wee wee German lairdie/ Woo'd and married an all -- Douglas KENNEDY talks about his grandfather: FTX-481-493

KIDD'S LAMENT - CAPTAIN KIDD

KIDNAPPING - MARY NEAL

KIDSON, Frank - (1855-1926) - Frank Kidson was a founder of the Folk Song Society in 1898 and a collector and publisher of all manner of traditional materials. He published two seminal works, Old English Dances (1890) and the better known Traditional Tunes in 1891. He was also responsible for a number of collaborative publications with Alfred Moffat and one with Mary Neal.
Frank Kidson lived in Chapeltown, Leeds and collected tunes and songs from his locality. He brought a street fiddler into the house on one occasion to the chagrin of his housekeeper who thought the itinerant musician to be a trifle insanitary. Kidson amassed his huge collection by visiting the British Library and then copying entire volumes longhand! He seems to have employed a series of 'collectors' to send him songs and tunes which he then collated. Charles Lolley of Goole was an important figure in Kidson's collecting activities being one of the main informants for the material in Traditional Tunes.
Thus, when Kidson died in the early 1920s he left a substantial private library and a quantity of manuscript notebooks including a numbered series of early 19th Century fiddler's tunebooks. These were offered to the City of Leeds Library - which refused the collection!
Thanks to the farsightedness of others further north, the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, the largest reference library in Europe, accepted the material and there it resides to this day. The irony of Yorkshire singers and musicians travelling to Scotland for access to local material is to be lamented.
