He plays an accordion and does old step dances, sings, tells folk tales, builds houses (he was one of the first in his district to use slate roofing), builds boats, is a blacksmith but cannot sign his name. His home which he built himself is an "island" of Gaelic in English-speaking North Connemara. The largest repository in Ireland of Gaelic songs, snatches and tales. He speaks English very little and with effort, but remembers several songs of the older vintage without fully understanding their meaning.
