FTX-107 - STEP IN WILD HORSE

CHESHIRE SOULING PLAYS

Cheshire Soulcakers, on All Soul's Day or Hallowe'en, go round the pubs, farms and the big houses to perform their 'nominy' (speeches) and to collect food & drink &/or money. The last to come in, Wild Horse, is a man holding a horse's skull, covered over with sacking. Wilfred Isherwood, leader of the Antrobus gang, introduces the various characters and talks about the custom, gang rivalry and burying the horse's heads - then we hear the whole play with its final song - as in the film -afterwards Bob Rodgers gives details of similar plays at Frodsham & Helsby, and Matthew Holinshead adds his from Swettenham. Recorded by Peter Kennedy 1954.
