Cheshire Soulcakers, on All Soul's Day or Hallowe'en,
go round the pubs, farms and the big houses to perform their 'nominy'
(speeches) and to collect food & drink &/or money. The last to
come in, Wild Horse, is a man holding a horse's skull, covered over with
sacking. Wilfred Isherwood, leader of the Antrobus gang, introduces the
various characters and talks about the custom, gang rivalry and burying
the horse's heads - then we hear the whole play with its final song -
as in the film -afterwards Bob Rodgers gives details of similar plays
at Frodsham & Helsby, and Matthew Holinshead adds his from Swettenham.
Recorded by Peter Kennedy 1954.
