PHOEBE SMITH & her family used to gather around
the camp fire at Melton, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, from where they operated
a scrap-metal 'general dealer' business - but in her younger days they
travelled the countryside of Kent - Phoebe has a rich store of beautiful
songs, her husband, Joe, plays fiddle & son, Joe, is also a singer.
In between songs, Phoebe & Joe talk about their
travelling life, courtship, marriage and death, the birth of their son,
wartime bombings, losing her mother - then, after some step-dancing with
mouth-organ, she tells the story of just what she did with Joe's fiddle
- recorded by Peter Kennedy in 1956
