FTX-923 - PRETTY CROWIN' CHICKENS
The Hicks Family & Friends
The third album in an important series with
30 ballads, folksongs and spirituals, many originating in Britain, sung in the
old nasal mountain style and recorded by Frank & Anne Warner, 1951-60. Twenrty
items were included in their book, TRADITIONAL AMERICAN FOLKSONGS. The older
singers, Monroe Presnell and Roby Hicks and his wife, Buna, and their family
preserve the ancient style, giving a concept of how our own unaccompanied tradition
must once have sounded.

THE HICKS FAMILY. Roby, uncle of Nathan Hicks, who was the Warner's
first contact when they wrote to him to order a home-made dulcimer, and Buna,
Roby's wife, raised 11 children and both played fiddle, banjo and dulcimer (see
FTX-927). Roby also told stories and Jack Tales (See FTX-928). Linzy was one
of 9 sons, their only two daughters being Hattie and Rosa.
HOMER CORNETT was a neighbour to Frank Proffitt (See FTX-924 and
FTX-925). His brother married Frank's sister. Homer was a shy young man, but
already, in 1959, playing a guitar, which was not so common in the mountains
as fiddles, banjos and dulcimers.
