YANKEE JOHN GALUSHA

43 British-American Folksongs performed by Yankee John Galusha and recorded in the Adirondacks by Frank and Anne Warner, 1940, 1946 & 1950. They include English, Scottish, Irish, Canadian & American Civil War Logger & Shantyboy Songs. 36 were included in TRADITIONAL AMERICAN FOLKSONGS (Syracuse Univ 1984) with texts, tunes, background notes and photos. This cassette, from the Adirondacks, N.Y., is the first of an outstanding archive series on U.S. East Coast traditions recorded by the Warners, 1940-1960, and edited by Peter Kennedy for FOLKTRAX by kind permission of the Warner Family.

Most of the recordings, 1940-1, were made on a Wilcox Gay "Recordio" using acetate-coated paper disks, the rest, 1946 & 1950 on reel-to-reel tape.

JOHN GALUSHA (1859-1950) was born at Thurman, Warren County, N.Y. His father, a farmer, fought in the War of 1812 and died in 1892. John became a lumberjack at the age of 16 and later as a fire-warden, game and fishing guide and forest- ranger. In this later capacity, he met the President and also the State Governor, He and his wife, Lizzie, lived at Minerva for over 60 years until she died in 1949, a year before John's death at the age of 91.
