#1-#6 - THE MAGPIES BAND were one of the first English Folksong Groups in the sixties to turn their attention to providing vigorous music for folk-dancing, keeping up the vitality by constantly looking out for unusual tune choices and by employing song-tunes that had not hitherto become part of the folk-dancers standard repertoire. They soon found out that their clients danced better to songs and tunes that were familiar to them. It was the late Kenneth Clark, at the time Midland Area Organiser of The English Folk Dance and Song Society, who first described this group as "something in the way of musical magpies - due to the way they go about picking up tunes for dancing" and the name stuck.

#7 - #16 - THE ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCE BAND was directed by Douglas Kennedy and led by Nan Fleming Williams. Picking of Sticks, The Old Mole, Rufty Tufty, lf all the World were paper, The Black Nag, Childgrove, Apley House, Fandango, & The Dressed Ship. The first five come from Playford's ENGLISH DANCING MASTER 1st Edition dated 1650, and the last two from Apted's Collection 1774. The first five dances all come from Playford's 1st Edition, dated 1650.
