- DIDDLE DADDLE
Mouth Music of Britain & Ireland
Mouth-music is known by many different names: The Irish like lilting,
the Gaels describe it as port-a-beul (mouth tune), the English and Welsh
gypsies go for jigging or tuning- up, but probably the most widespread
term is diddling. More than 30 performers are featured here providing
over 60 samples of different types of vocables, used without the aid
of the instruments they supplant, for dancing certainly, but also for dandling,
for imitating the sounds of song-birds & seals, for mourning the dead, known
as caoine or keening, or used, as a tune-swapping language, called
cantaireachd or cantering, by Highland pipers perfecting their
playing of pibroch.
