FTX 093 - ROCKET ALONG
FAMOUS FOLKSINGERS IN THE FIFTIES
What brought about the British Folksong Revival in the 1950s?
The early collectors scoured the countryside with the first tape recorders and
on the radio, for the very first time, listeners heard traditional performers
and singing unaccompanied (no more than two verses permitted). Then with the
first city performers the first use of guitars, banjos and percussion accompaniment.
For this, Peter set up a studio at Cecil Sharp House and, after the buses stopped
running in Regents Park Road, he recorded the best of London singers through
the night. He took the tapes to George Martin at Abbey Road, John Marshall designed
the covers, and three LPs were published: Rocket Along, Jug of Punch and
Pinch of Salt. FOOTNOTE: Recent so-called historians have been declaring
that the English Folk Dance And Song Society played no part in the Post-War
Revival. On the contrary they were leading the revival.

Ewan MacColl claims he obtained the words in the form of an epic poem from a
Soho street gambler in 1953. "Through a street photographer, Lazar Copeland,
I was introduced to "The Professor", who is something of a pundit in the small
off-white world in which he moves. The original was extremely long and cast
in 12-line stanzas and couldn't have been sung. I liked the use of the trade
terminology so I recast it in "Come-all-ye" form and put a tune to it".
