FTX-063 - THE LOVER'S STONE

ANCIENT TRADITIONS OF ORKNEY

ETHEL & JOHN FINDLATER

Ethel FINDLATER (1899-1973) of Dounby, Birsay on the mainland of Orkney, got most of her songs and ballads from her mother - her husband, John (1893-1959) came from Stromness and was much in demand as an MC at local dances and weddings. Although Ethel played melodeon at dances, she & John preferred to sing unaccompanied. Besides reciting his courtship poem on "bundling", John talks about local weddings - recorded by Peter Kennedy in 1955
