HALLATON - Leicestershire - 12m E of Leicester near Market Harborough - Easter Custom: "Bottle Kicking & Hare Pie Scramble" held annually on Easter Monday. In the morning there is the "Children's Parade" (former Friendly Society Walk). In the afternoon the pie (now beef not hare) and ale are taken to Fox Inn for start of procession. Three small barrels called bottles - two full of ale but one a dummy with bright red, white and blue hoops and a sack containing pies for scramble. Bottle is not kicked but picked up during the contest between the home team who must be Hallatonians and their opponents who come from the parish of Medbourne or are visitors. Villager was heard to say: "Medbourne usually win because they bring along half the country Rugby team!" Two "bottles" (games) are held and dummy only used if there is a draw and there is need for a "decider".
