FTX-160 - CUCANANDY-NANDY
ELIZABETH CRONIN
Outstanding Co.Cork singer (1879-1956) with ballads, dandlings and lullabies:
25 songs with talk about her singing, two of the songs in Gaelic, and another
two being part Gaelic & part English. In the 1940's she was recorded by The
Irish Folklore Commission and, in 1950, she was visited by Seamus Ennis and
by Alan Lomax. Not only has she been a great source of good songs, but her quiet
singing style has given inspiration to many revival performers.

Elizabeth Cronin was born at Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, and learned most of
her songs from her parents. Her father was John Herlihy and her mother was a
Tuomey. She also learned some of her songs from travellers and journeymen. In
her youth, throughout West Muske, songs were performed in both English and Irish
Gaelic.
