FTX-050 - THE MARI LWYD

WELSH CUSTOMS, SONGS & DANCES

The Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare or Mary) appears as a winter hobby-horse custom in a 1956 actuality recording - it captures the excitement of the New Year visit by the Llangynwyd party, near Maesteg, Glamorgan, S.Wales with some improvised verse-making from inside as well as outside the houses visited by the party. All is explained in English by the performers, William David Thomas and Thomas Jenkins

Then to Nantgarw where Margaretta Thomas gives her version - She sings and talks about Christmas and New Year, Halloweeen and Ducking for Apples, Nutting time, Bonfires & other customs and introduces the Nantgarw Dances.

All those items sung in Welsh are explained & translated
